The alpine classification of Elbrous is estimated to be 2A snow ice, two peaks 2B. There are other, more complex routes, such as Elbrous (Z) on C-Z rib 3A.
Traditionally, the Grand Caucasus is divided into three parts: Western Caucasus(from the Black Sea to Elbrus) Central Caucasus (from Elbras to Kazbek) and East Caucasus (from Kazbek to the Caspian Sea).
